Philip & Kelvin LaVerne Important Illuminated Bronze Sculptures "Grace and Harmony" ca. 1970 (Signed) - SOLD

Evan Lobel

_MG_624122.jpg

One-of-a-kind pair of large illuminated sculptures, “Grace and Harmony”, hand-brazed in bronze tones, one with green patina and the other highly textured, with complex tubular elements welded around them, by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, American ca. 1970 (signed on bases “Philip + Kelvin LaVerne”).  Philip & Kelvin LaVerne produced only these 2 illuminated sculptures and they believed the lighting in back and above created halos around them giving them a spiritual aura.  On the backs are the original fluorescent fixtures which was commonly used in the 1970’s.  On top are 2 bulbs on each (one in the white orb and the other recessed in the open top).  These artworks were called “functional sculptures” by the LaVernes and these are two of the absolute best.

Philip and Kelvin LaVerne Very Rare and Important "Me Too" Coffee Table 1970s (Signed) - SOLD

Evan Lobel

Extremely rare and important cast bronze “Me Too” coffee table, female figural sculpture with multicolor hand painted enamels with biomorphic glass top, by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, American 1970's (Signed “Philip+Kelvin LaVerne” on supporting element). According to Kelvin LaVerne, this was an edition of 2. It is unique and complex with exquisitely detailed elements. New glass table top newly fabricated to the specs of the original. It was named Me Too because there were two models in the artists’ studio and one was getting most of the attention. So the other insisted on posing for this table. This table was named in the 1970’s so it has absolutely nothing to do with the Me Too Movement of this era. However, there is a random connection to the movement:  the model for this table had been complaining that in a previous modeling session with a different artist, a man had touched her and made her feel uncomfortable.  This table is beautiful in how the woman is sculpted and cast.  The hand reaching up through the glass is hers; the hand on her hip is not her own:  it’s a man’s hand.  And it is meant to portray her story of posing nude and the feeling of disquiet.  The glass top works beautifully in this regard because it makes all of us onlookers to the moment, like voyeurs looking through a window.

Evan Lobel

Exceptional "Pygmalion" painting in patinated and engraved bronze and pewter with complex scene in enamel cloisonne with hand-brazed sculptured frame by Philip & Kelvin LaVerne, American 1960's (signed “Philip Kelvin LaVerne” on front of painting). This work retains the Seymour Gallery label on the back. The Seymour Gallery was located inside the LaVerne Gallery and showcased their finest artworks. The LaVerne's experimented with assymetry in several of their works. The hand-brazed bronze sculptured frame adds another artistic element to this artwork. This artwork is magnificent.

Kelvin explains: “According to Ovid in Metamorphoses, the goddess Aphrodite answers the sculptor Pygmalion’s prayer to bring Galatea, a sculpure that he had created and fall in love with, to life. Today, the myth is analogous to a man falling in love with his work.”

Philip and Kelvin LaVerne One-of-a-Kind "La Famille" Sculpture Art Installation 1970s (Signed) - SOLD

Evan Lobel

One-of-a-kind life size art installation, "La Famille", with cast and patinated bronze sculptures of father, mother and daughter holding a patinated and engraved bronze and pewter table top, incorporating an abstract painting with enamel cloisonne, by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, American 1970s (signed twice: “Philip+Kelvin LaVerne” on edge of table top, and “Philip Kelvin LaVerne” in colored part of table top). The solid bronze sculptures were attained via lost wax process which is extremely difficult with works of this size and complexity. As stated by Kelvin LaVerne discussing this unique work, “La Famille” is a sculpture of a typical family in which their love for each other is expressed in a quiet and subtle manner rather than a picture of them embracing.” It’s the celebration of the a family which enjoys every moment of being together. This work was a unique art installation which resided in their gallery. A photo of this work in the Seymour Gallery section of the LaVerne gallery is shown in this listing. Only the finest artworks were exhibited in the Seymour Gallery.
