Philip & Kelvin LaVerne Rare and Important "Symphony" Dining Table 1970s (signed) - SOLD

Evan Lobel

Rare and important hand-welded and patinated bronze sculpture dining table “Symphony” with glass top by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, American 1970’s (signed “Philip Kelvin LaVerne”). According to Kelvin LaVerne, only 3 were made. Philip and Kelvin LaVerne often used the arts as their inspiration; and music served as inspiration for several of their works. It was inspired by a symphony by Beethoven. This piece has a physical harmony and balance which is extraordinary. This table is a LaVerne masterpiece. This table can accommodate almost any size glass top.

The caption reads, “The SYMPHONY dining table, hand-brazed in patinated bronze with green patina and a with glass top, was created in the 1970s. The base of this important sculpture was inspired by a curved line drawn by Beethoven on the manuscript for Eroica after he removed its dedication to Napoleon Bonaparte. It was originally dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte as Beethoven was an admirer until Napoleon declared himself emperor.”

Unique and important "Aubusson" dining table with flowing wreath motif in patinated and engraved bronze and pewter with hand-painted green and blue enamels by Philip & Kelvin LaVerne, American 1960’s (Signed “Philip Kelvin LaVerne” on top). This table was designed by Kelvin and was inspired by 18th century French design. It is part of the LaVernes’ Abstract Series. The sculptural legs are dynamic and offer a sense of architecture with their negative space. This is a LaVerne masterpiece.

Rare and early “Chan Floral” coffee table in patinated and engraved bronze and pewter with hand-painted blue enamels and lovely botanical motif by Philip & Kelvin LaVerne, American 1958-9 (Signed “Phillip K. LaVerne” on top). This table retains its original gallery label which shows Gem Stone Arts, the company where the LaVernes were experimenting with prototypes before the opening of the Philip LaVerne Gallery on East 57th Street in NYC in 1960. We have never seen another one of these tables. The climbing botanical motif is intricate and beautifully hand-colored. The LaVernes experimented with botanical subject matter throughout their collaboration.

"The Creation of Man,” a coffee table in patinated bronze and pewter with engraved tribute to the iconic painting by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel with hand-painted enamels by Philip & Kelvin LaVerne, American 1960's (signed “Phillip-Kelvin LaVerne after Michelangelo” on top). This is an early LaVerne work. The relief set against patinated bronze is simply magnificent.

Stunning "Mark II Coffee Table" in midnight blue lacquered embossed lizard leather with inset polished chrome trim and smoke glass top by Karl Springer, American 1994 (Signed “Karl Springer 1994” on bottom). This table is incredibly chic. The materials and craftsmanship are remarkable. The Springer showroom closed in 1993 and any open orders were completed in 1994. This is the last year that Karl Springer pieces were made.

Philip and Kelvin LaVerne Rare "Persephone Enslaved" Sculpture Coffee Table 1970s (Signed) - SOLD

Important and rare “Persephone Enslaved” cast sculpture in patinated bronze with green patina and hand-painted enamels in green and blue with welded chain elements on a patinated bronze base with customized thick glass top by Philip and Kelvin Laverne, American 1970's (signed “Philip LaVerne” on base).  The form of the welded chains and the fantastic sense of the figure’s movement make this table dynamic. Cast sculptures by the LaVernes were only done in small editions for a few years in the early 1970’s as they were laborious and expensive to produce.
