Philip & Kelvin LaVerne Rare and Important "Tao Cabinet" 1960s - SOLD
Evan Lobel
Rare and important "Tao Cabinet" in patinated and engraved bronze and pewter with hand painted enamels by Philip & Kelvin LaVerne, American 1960's. Signed on the bottom right door front “Philip & Kelvin LaVerne”. The top and sides incorporate the Kuan motif (interlocking circles) which is meant to evoke something from the past. There is delicate bronze fretwork over pewter on the drawers. The base is hand-brazed in patinated bronze. The interior is lacquered green and the drawers are trimmed in bronze. This work is magnificent.
It states in the original catalog: "Delicately hand sculpted in bronze and pewter, a highly functional cabinet depicting a poetic theme of the Tao dynasty. Adequate storage space is provided through the use of beautifully finished shelves and felt lined compartments. The cabinet rests on a hand chased bronze plinth."
This is an artistic masterpiece.
