Hand-blown amber glass vase, undulating form with gold foil and murrhines, by Giulio Radi for A.V.E.M., Murano Italy, ca 1950. This vase is a like a jewel.

Reference:
AVEM Artistic Production 1932-1972 by Marc Heiremans published by Arnoldsche in 2020, pages 48 thru 55 show similar pieces by Radi with the same technique.

Provenance:
Evan Lobel purchased this pieces directly from A.V.E.M. in 2001 as part of a large collection of pieces stored there from the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s.

Pair of beautifully crafted “Sled Chairs” No. 1060P in mirror-finished solid stainless steel with hand-stitched glove leather seat pads over woven rattan by Ward Bennett for Brickel, American 1970s (signed on bottom with original metal tags which read “Ward Bennett designs for Brickel Associates”). These chairs are considered one of Ward Bennett’s best designs. These chairs were copied and the copies are not solid stainless steel.

Rare and important “Bathers” coffee table in patinated and engraved bronze and pewter by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, American 1960s. Signed on top “Kelvin + Philip LaVerne” and original paper label on bottom. This is considered one of the LaVerne’s most striking and important designs. It was inspired by Kelvin’s time in Fire Island.

ALCHEMY: THE ART OF PHILIP AND KELVIN LAVERNE written by Evan Lobel with Kelvin LaVerne, published by Pointed Leaf Press in 2024, the Bathers Series is discussed at length in the introduction and this table is shown on page 128 in the section titled The Abstract Series. The caption reads, “The 1960s BATHERS coffee table is described in the Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, Sculpture III catalog, published in the 1970s, as a “continuous flow of hand sculpted bronze forms set into a pewter background.  Buried in earth to attain patinas of natural beauty.”
