Philip & Kelvin LaVerne Rare "Viola" Coffee Table 1960s (Signed)

Evan Lobel

Rare "Viola" coffee table, hand-cut design in patinated bronze and pewter with hand-painted enamels and glass top by Philip & Kelvin LaVerne, American 1960s. Signed on top by “Philip Kelvin LaVerne”. The shadows cast from this musically inspired coffee table are supposed to represent notes floating through the air. The glass top is an integral part of the design of the table. The hand-cut fretwork is truly a marvel.

”The Art of Philip LaVerne, Sculpture II, Bronze and Pewter Tables, catalog published in the 1970’s, photo of this model shown on page 20 with description on page 43 which states: “The brilliant world of music was the inspiration for this magnificent design. An abstract violin, along with other musical symbols have been carved in a fret work of open bronze. The pierced top rests under a glass surface which allows the most delightful reflections of music to come through. Open sculptures of bronze glide up to form the legs.”
