Philip and Kelvin LaVerne Stunning "Chan" Coffee Table 1960s (Signed) - ON HOLD
Evan Lobel
Iconic "Chan" coffee table with Chinese motif in patinated and engraved bronze and pewter with hand-painted enamels in green, blue, and orange with gold and copper leaf on a bronze tristar base by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, American 1960s (signed “Philip Kelvin LaVerne” on top). The coloration of this table is superb. The Chan coffee table was typically made with a traditional octagonal base. This rare variation by the artists has a modern base which gives the table an airy, timeless feeling.

ALCHEMY: THE ART OF PHILIP AND KELVIN LAVERNE written by Evan Lobel with Kelvin LaVerne, published by Pointed Leaf Press in 2024, The Chan Series is discussed at length in the introduction and tables are shown on pages 44-49 in the section titled Historical Civilization Series. The caption from the LaVerne catalog reads, “Chinese artistry at its peak under the Chan Dynasty is recreated in this intricately carved design. We see peasants carrying a sacred gift to the Emperor’s child. Delicately wrought leaves and figures, combine with a rich variety of multicolored patinas to create the Chinoiserie top. The design is credited as inspiring and evoking French and English periods of furniture design.”
