Philip and Kelvin LaVerne Rare and Important "Chan Li" Cabinet 1960s (Signed) - SOLD

Exceptional “Chan Li” 4 door cabinet in patinated and engraved bronze and pewter with continuous Chinese scene with hand-painted vibrant enamels of blue, red and orange with red lacquered interior and hand-chased bronze plinth base by Philip & Kelvin LaVerne, American 1960s (signed “Philip & Kelvin LaVerne“ on front). The sides and back are in the Kuan pattern of interlocking circles which is meant to evoke something from the past. The interior holds bronze trimmed shelves and a felt-lined drawer with Kuan pattern front and fish shaped pull. This rare cabinet is an impressive and masterful work of art.

ALCHEMY: THE ART OF PHILIP AND KELVIN LAVERNE written by Evan Lobel with Kelvin LaVerne, published by Pointed Leaf Press in 2024, The Chan Series is discussed at length in the introduction and this cabinet is shown in an original ad from the 1970s in the section titled Historical Civilization Series. The caption reads, “A 1978 advertisement for the CHAN-LI cabinet, which was created in the 1960s, describes the piece as “Depicting an ancient scene in all its Oriental splendor… A functional sculpture for the discerning collector.”

This model etagere is quite rare. It is designed so that if you remove the lower glass shelf the wood table top can be used as a writing desk.

Paul Evans Rare and Important "Argente" 2-Door Cabinet 1968 (Signed and Dated) - SOLD

Rare and important Argente 2 door cabinet in welded and enameled aluminum with natural cleft slate top by Paul Evans, American 1968 (signed and dated “Paul Evans 68” on bottom of right door). The interior has the original black lacquer wash. His series “Argente,” which is Latin for silver, has become especially prized in recent decades, both for its melding of technology with hand-crafted touches and the rarity of the works. The Argente Series was only in production for a few years (1965-72). This piece is finished superbly on both the exterior and interior.

Karl Springer Ming Writing Desk/Console in Embossed Crocodile 1970s - SOLD

Beautifully crafted Ming Writing Desk/Console in lacquered embossed crocodile leather with 3 drawers by Karl Springer, American 1970's. This was originally designed as a console which doubled as a writing desk but it is perfectly suited to be either. The glides on the drawers have been replaced with self-closing glides. Drawer bottoms covered in moire silk. Center drawer has a pencil holder. Springer’s lacquered leathers were typically done in a 2 tone lacquer and the colors here are white and ivory. 2 Tone lacquers give the leather incredible depth.

There is 1/2 inch high recessed base. Chests on either side of the center piece which has 2 doors concealing shelves and drawers. Newly relacquered white (as original) by Lobel Modern. It was made in 3 sections so it could be easily moved.

Exceptional Jansen Cabinet in Grey Burl with Chic Mixed Metals 1970s (Signed) - SOLD

Rare and chic cabinet model AD-362 in grey burl wood with architectural metal accents in chrome, brass and copper by Alain Delon for Jansen, France 1972 (signed on side - see photo). The back and interior are completely finished. These pieces by Alain Delon are very hard to come by. Very few designers could mix three metals with such stunning results.

Philip and Kelvin LaVerne Rare and Important "Odyssey Cabinet" 1960s (Signed) - SOLD

Very rare and important "Odyssey Cabinet" with ancient Greek motif in patinated and engraved bronze and pewter with hand-painted enamels by Philip & Kelvin LaVerne, American 1960’s (signed “Kelvin Philip LaVerne” on front of door). Interior has a speckled green lacquer. Drawer and shelf fronts trimmed in bronze. Every element of this cabinet is magnificent. On the left door, there is an artist sketching on the steps of the Parthenon. Kelvin LaVerne explained to Evan Lobel that he drew himself into the scene. Only a few of these were made according to Kelvin, making them extremely rare. A superb work of art.
