Philip LaVerne One-Of-A-Kind Sculpture Game Table with Carved Hands 1966 (Signed) - SOLD

One-of-a-kind sculpture game table in teak with book-matched Carpathian elm top with 2 drawers on opposite sides, each with a carved articulated hand over it, by Philip LaVerne, American 1966 (signed on top “Philip LaVerne”). The sculpted tapering legs are works of art. Philip LaVerne briefly experimented using wood as a medium in 1966 .  These works from this series are extremely rare.  The craftsmanship is simply superb with dovetail construction of the drawers and hand-sculpted joinery at the corners that is second to none. Even the bottom is completely finished. This is a tour de force of design and craftsmanship.

Pair of impressive custom order 6 panel screens (12 panels total) with continuous scene, black lacquer with carved Chinese scene with opulent gold and multicolor enamels with brass sabots and hinges, sold through the Karl Springer NYC showroom, 1980's. Backs of screens are beautifully executed with bamboo and flower imagery. The quality of execution of these screens is incredible. Karl Springer sold Chinese screens in his showrooms (photos in the Lobel Modern archive). This pair of screens is the best we have ever seen.

There is a metal cleat on the back for hanging. This piece is both large and stunning.

(168.9 × 130.8 cm) This work is incredibly dynamic and a wonderful example of this artist’s work. This work is in numerous collections including the Whitney Museum.

The craftsmanship of this piece is superb with polished steel supports under the glass. While this design was more often done with coffee tables and benches, very few etageres were ever made. There is a glass shelf on the top.

Back is covered in green felt. The LaVernes were Jewish and had a deep appreciation for religious and historical iconography of all kinds.
